Differences of Interpreters and Translators
Differences between Interpretation and Translation
Interpretation and translation services, although many have used these terms interchangeably, are two different words. Interpretation is a manner in which an interpreter interprets one language (source language) into another language (target language) orally, either simultaneously or consecutively.Translation, on the other hand, involves the transference of meaning from text to text (written or recorded), with the translator having time and access to resources (dictionaries, glossaries, etc.) to produce an accurate document or verbal artifact.
Interpretation is usually considered as the most complex service compared to translation. This is because interpreters don’t have the time and resources that translators have in translating a language into another. However, translation services are also known for its sensitivity particularly if it involves Legal translation services which may follow a number of protocols for the translation to become valid evidence used in court of laws.
Difference of Translators and Interpreters in Profession
Although their professions are similar in a sense that their task is to translate or interpret the source language into the target language, a professional interpreter cannot be considered as a professional translator, and vice versa.
